Wireless Access Network Policy

Purpose

​

The Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield (PLJCS) offers free wireless access (Wi-Fi) for library patrons to use with their own personal devices, such as Chromebooks, laptops, and mobile devices. These wireless access points are unsecured, accessible only during normal library hours, and filtered to comply with CIPA regulations. A customer's use of this service is also governed by the Library's Computer and Internet Use Policy. There is no password required to log onto the Library’s Wi-Fi network.

 

Guidelines and Responsibilities

All users of the library’s wireless access network (Wi-Fi) must adhere to this policy and the following guidelines and responsibilities:

 

  • The library cannot guarantee that a user’s device will work with the library's wireless network or access point. Library staff can provide general information for connecting your device to the wireless network, but cannot troubleshoot problems related to your wireless device or assist in making changes to your device’s network settings and/or hardware configuration.

  • All Wi-Fi users should have up-to-date virus protection on their wireless devices. The library is not responsible for any information (e.g., credit card) that is compromised on the network, or for any damage caused to devices due to electric surges, security issues or consequences caused by viruses or hacking. 

  • Use of the library’s wireless network is entirely at the discretion of the user. All users are expected to use the library's wireless access in a legal and responsible manner, consistent with the educational, recreational, and informational purposes for which it is provided. 

  • As with most public wireless access points, the Library’s wireless connection is not secure. This means that there can be untrusted parties between you and anybody with whom you communicate, and any information being transmitted could potentially be intercepted by another wireless user. Cautious and informed wireless users should choose not to transmit personal information (credit card numbers, passwords, and any other personal or sensitive information) while using any wireless access point within the Library. Please take appropriate precautions when using this service.
