2024 Children's Summer Reading

Adventure Begins At Your Library!

​

The Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield is excited to launch its 2024 Children's Summer Reading Program with the theme of "Adventure Begins at Your Library." The Children's Department will have weekly events in June, July, and August. In June we will also have the StarLab, a mobile planetarium, for families to sign up to visit. Children's activities and programs are geared towards children ages 0 - 12 (middle school-aged). See the information below for more details.

Reading Logs

​

  • Reading bags (containing reading logs and other materials) will be available beginning June 3rd, 2024 in the Children's Department on a first-come, first-served basis, as supplies are limited.

  • While reading bags are limited, reading logs will be available throughout the summer.

  • Readers will use the reading logs at home to track their progress towards their reading goal.

  • Participants can earn incentives and prizes for reading (for every hour of reading time, children earn a visit to the library treasure chest to pick a small prize; completion of entire log earns a ticket into the grand prize drawing).

  • The deadline to turn in all reading logs is 5 PM on August 2nd.​

  • Grand prize winners will be announced on August 14th, 2024.

Prizes

Prizes for grand prize winners are as follows:

  • First Place: Kindle Fire Tablet (13th GEN; 32GB) with protective cover case.

  • Second Place: Lego Classic 790 piece set, Lego City Mars Research Shuttle Set, and Lego Creator 3-in-1 set.

  • Third Place: Go Sports brand Classic Ladder Toss game and Toss Catch Game Set

StarLab Adventures - Mobile Planetarium

Join the Children's Department for an out-of-this-world experience! Registration is required to reserve a spot to visit the StarLab. Each participant must register online via Eventbrite and present their ticket to be admitted into the StarLab. Children must be accompanied by an adult. 

​

The StarLab is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), as administered by the State Library of North Carolina, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

Calendars

 

We have many wonderful events planned this summer. Below you will find our summer reading calendars for June through August. Please note the following:

  • Some events require registration and will be marked with a red "R" on the calendar. To register for events, please call the Children's Department at 984-230-4838. For June registration, you may also email Ashley at awood@pljcs.org.

  • If an event registration is full, we will update our live calendar at bit.ly/CSLP24PLJCS.

  • Events may be subject to cancellation or change and we will communicate that on the live calendar, our website, and social media as well.​

  • All storytimes begin at 10 AM and are geared to ages 0-5.

  • Unless otherwise noted, all other events begin at 10 AM, are open to all with no preregistering.

  • Items with a red “R” require registration AT LEAST one week prior to the event.

  • The August 7th event, “Meet the Animals: NC Museum of Natural Science,” has two shows. One show is at 10 AM. and the other begins at 11:30 AM. (Registration is required for either show).
